Trefach Working Farm

Trefach Farm is a family run, active Pembrokeshire Farm and comprises 300 acres of mixed farming, sheep and beef with a percentage of arable (barley for animal feed). Most of the feed is home grown which gives the produce its unique flavour. We have been farming here for 25 years and are delighted to welcome you onto our farm, where you can enjoy a relaxing farm holiday and even learn about farm life.

The farm land is mainly rolling fields with areas of small woodland. We have a stream running through the farm, which eventually leads to the coast at Newport beach. There is a bridal pathway leading through the farm, where you can walk along and experience the beautiful countryside. Often you will see sparrow hawks, buzzards, red kites and sometimes a fox or badger on your walks, especially at dusk or dawn.

We have a flock of breeding ewes that lamb in March/April. This is a busy time of the year when things are moving fast. Everyone on the farm is busy caring for the new arrivals. If you are lucky enough to be staying at Trefach at this time, try counting the new born lambs or you may even have the opportunity to bottle feed some of our molly lambs. During May/June the sheep are gathered by our Collie dogs to be shorn and are temporarily separated from their lambs, providing a great opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of professionals at their work.

We have a herd of suckling cows with calves at foot which are weaned in the autumn. Calving takes place in late spring and early summer, proving to be another busy time of the year when we have to be vigilant with regard to the well being of the cows and young calves. Cattle and sheep are regularly moved around different parts of the farm in a field rotation.

June, July and August is a time for silage and haymaking. This is for feeding our animals during the winter months. September is then harvesting time where barley is gathered for feed and the straw for bedding.

We also have horses that are for our leisure and competition use and occasionally some of our brood mares have foals. The farrier visits the farm to have the horses shod, our visitors often find this intriguing and interesting. We also have a number of farm cats, who always enjoy being spoilt by guests.

Dogs and pets are welcome on our farm accommodation. If you are bringing your dog, we would like it to be well behaved. Experience the countryside as a living entity. The seasons blend into one another, as does the farmer’s daily chores as the season dictates.
